After they were burned down by the Tatar (Mongol) army during its invasion of Russia in 1236–40, Ivan I had sturdier walls, of oak and stucco, erected about 1340. In 1367 and 1368 Prince Dmitry Donskoy rebuilt the walls, using white stone.
