Hace 3 días · The house was occupied first by its creator, Edward Russell, earl of Orford, and then by Sir Robert Walpole, PaymasterGeneral, from 1714. (fn. 11) Walpole employed Sir John Vanbrugh to enlarge the house, and design stables and coachhouse and garden buildings including the surviving orangery.
Hace 2 días · In his retirement, as Earl of Orford, Walpole lived here till his death, March 18th, 1745. John Ranby, the surgeon to the Hospital, attended him during his illness, writing afterwards an account of it, which was published.
