Hace 5 días · While the Strand was inhabited by the highest titled families, it is no matter of wonder that St. Martin's-in-the-Fields should have been a somewhat fashionable parish in the early Georgian era. In 1721 the church was pulled down, and the present edifice was erected in its place.

  2. Hace 3 días · It was built by Christopher Schirider, a son-in-law of Father Smith, and cost £1,500. In 1799 this organ was sold for £200 to the Church of St. Mary, Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, where it still remains. It bears the inscription: "The gift of His Most Sacred Majesty King George, 1726" on the front (Plate 22 a ).

  3. Hace 5 días · Until the time of James I, St. Martin's Lane was a country lane linking the churches of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and St. Giles-in-the-Fields; as such it was probably in existence at the beginning of the 13th century, and there may have been a field path there even earlier.
