Der Neuaufbau erfolgte in mehreren Etappen in den Jahren 1663 bis 1780. Von 1736 bis 1780 gab es hier fürstliche Hofhaltung nachgeborener Prinzen und Prinzessinnen aus dem fürstlichen Hause Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg.
