  1. Pall Mall. The street now known as Pall Mall was laid out in its present position in 1661, on the site of the old pall mall alley (see page 24). It replaced the ancient highway which until then had led from Charing Cross to St. James's Palace along a line roughly parallel with, but south of, the present street (fig. 58).
