Related to the Habsburg rulers of the Holy Roman Empire he was the third and last monarch on the Polish throne from the House of Vasa.

From 1592 to 1599 he was also King of Sweden and Grand Duke of Finland. Sigismund had many enemies to face and he coped with the problems afflicitng his realm with overall competence.
