Das Ich setzt sich selbst schlechthin und alle Realität in sich. Es setzt alles als reine Identität, d.h. alles gleich mit sich selbst. Die materiale Urform des Ichs ist demnach die Einheit seines Setzens, insofern es alles sich gleich setzt. Das absolute Ich geht niemals aus sich selbst heraus.
Im Zentrum der 1795 veröffentlichten Schrift Vom Ich als Princip der Philosophie oder über das Unbedingte im menschlichen Wissen (Ichschrift) von 1795 steht der Gedanke des Unbedingten, den Schelling ontologisch zu explizieren versucht.
Allein jene Philosophen wollten wirklich das Ich, und kein Nicht-Ich zum Prinzip der Philosophie, aber der Begriff von Tatsache sollte deshalb nicht aufgegeben werden.
