He was associated with the queen's favourite, Walter Devereux, Earl of Essex, in most of his successes, and married the earl's sister, Penelope Devereux, in 1580, which led to much unhappiness as she was in love with Sir Philip Sidney. It was to her that Sidney's sonnets 'Astrophel and Stella' were addressed.
Hace 3 días · Richard died in 1494 and from his widow Elizabeth the manor reverted to the direct descendants of William de Ferrers, a line represented in 1503 by the infant Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers. Lord Ferrers, who thus became the principal landowner in Taynton, was created Viscount Hereford in 1550.

Hace 5 días · When James, Earl of Wiltshire and 5th Earl of Ormond, was attainted in 1461 this moiety of the manor was forfeited, and shortly afterwards it was granted to Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers. The attainder, however, was reversed and the estates restored to the earl's brothers Sir John (d. 1478) and Sir Thomas Butler.
