William Comyn was the son and heir of Richard Comyn (Cumin) (d.c.1178), justiciar of Lothian, and his wife, Hextilda, granddaughter and heiress of Donald Ban, king of Scotland. William was lord of Kirkintilloch and Lenzie by c. 1200 and also held lands in Tynedale, Peeblesshire, Roxburghshire, Dumfriesshire.
