Hace 4 días · Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange, who held the castle on behalf of Queen Mary during the Lang Siege of 1571–73. Painting by Jean Clouet. James IV was killed in battle at Flodden Field, on 9 September 1513. Expecting the English to press their advantage, the Scots hastily constructed a town wall around Edinburgh and augmented the castle's defences.
Hace 3 días · In return, and in fulfilment of a pledge by Kirkcaldy of Grange, he and the Master of Rothes were to be requested to send the son of Governor Arran, whom they kept prisoner, by sea to the King. This pledge seems to have been given in August by William Kirkcaldy, the Master of Grange, in his father's behalf.
Hace 4 días · William Charles Lucy (d. 1898), who continued his father's business from 1851, built Harescombe Grange on an estate he bought near the city in 1861. (fn. 43) Apart from timber and grain, imports covered a wide range of goods in the middle of the century, including metals, ores, Welsh slates and coal, wines, spirits, Irish porter, potatoes, animal feed, and fertilizers.
Hace 2 días · To the east of this is a wall monument to Sir William Robinson, 1736, and on the west side one to Sir William Robinson, bart., son of Sir Tancred Robinson, 1712. In the tower are four bells: (1) with the inscription 'Jesus be our speed, 1622'; (2) '+ Jesus be our speed, 1620'; (3) 'Deus salvet ecclesiam suam, 1725,' bearing the mark of Samuel Smith of York; the fourth was recast by Warner in 1880.

Prince William will be joined by European royals from Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands and Belgium. King Charles will also travel to Normandy with the Queen for a commemorative event.
