Hace 2 días · The central feature was a massive square keep, evidently built by Walter of Gloucester in the early 12th century; it was heightened in the 1230s. A chapel adjoined the keep and was probably contemporary with it.
Hace 4 días · YORK CASTLE (Pls. 1–16, 62, Figs. pp. 62, 63) consists of a Norman motte and bailey with a 13th-century quadrilobate stone keep (Clifford's Tower) on the motte and remains of the mediaeval curtain wall and towers round part of the bailey, which now contains the Debtors' Prison of 1701–5, the Assize Courts of 1773–7, and the Female Prison of 1780 and 1803.

One is that it is a corruption of the Old French La toron des chevaliers, or of the Castilian La torón de los caballeros (The Castle of the Knights), so named by the Knights Templar, or by its Castilian founder, Rodrigo Gonzales de Lara (see below).
Hace 4 días · CASTLE. Colchester castle was built for William I, probably by Eudes the sewer c. 1076, using for the foundation of the keep the podium of the Roman temple of Claudius. (fn. 1) The surviving building, 46.3 m. × 33.5 m., is the largest Norman keep in England, larger than the White Tower of London which was built on a similar plan.
