Hace 17 horas · The beginnings of the George Peabody Library date back to the founding of the Peabody Institute in 1857 by George Peabody, who dedicated the institution to the citizens of Baltimore. Now a part of Johns Hopkins University, the “cathedral of books” contains nearly 300,000 volumes ranging from religion to British art to science.

Hace 3 días · George Peabody was born in 1795 in Massachusetts. He became a banker and merchant and in 1837 settled in London, where he died in 1869. Although he had enormous wealth he lived modestly, devoting his fortune to philanthropic ventures in the United States and England.
The collections in Baltimore's George Peabody Library are available for use by the general public. Peabody provided the initial funding following his service in the state militia during the War of 1812, but its construction was delayed by the ensuing Civil War and it opened in 1878
