The merchants of Tudor York traded not merely with the Netherlands and with north Germany; they remained active, as in previous centuries, in the Baltic. When the Eastland Merchants were incorporated in 1579, they wrote to the mayor and aldermen of York, pointing out that merchants who for the past ten years had been trading with the Baltic were entitled to apply for membership.
