Partiendo de los primeros modelos atómicos de Dalton, Thomson y Rutherford, cada uno contribuyó con ideas fundamentales, pero también presentaron limitaciones que no podían explicar completamente las observaciones experimentales.
Hace 2 días · In 1897, J. J. Thomson discovered that cathode rays are not a form of light but made of negatively-charged particles because they can be deflected by electric and magnetic fields. He measured these particles to be at least a thousand times lighter than hydrogen (the lightest atom).

Thomson Portanto, o modelo atômico de Dalton precisaria ser substituído por um novo modelo, que ficou conhecido como pudim de passas (mais próximo, talvez, de um panetone!). Nesse modelo, o átomo é uma esfera de carga positiva com partículas de carga negativa incrustadas (passas ou frutas!).
