David Byrne and DEVO have unveiled the contribution to Noise for Now Vol. 2, an abortion access and reproductive rights benefit compilation landing everywhere on June 21st. The song, “Empire,” was originally written by Byrne and DEVO for Byrne’s collaboration-heavy 1997 solo album, Feelings.

I mean, it’s based on (and sampling) Bruce Hornsby’s “That’s The Way It Is”, which is from 1986 and also about systemic racism. It (unfortunately) feels timeless/prescient because we’re still dealing with the fallout of things like the ‘War On Drugs’ and militarized policing.
