The Captaincy General of Cuba ( Spanish: Capitanía General de Cuba) was an administrative district of the Spanish Empire created in 1607 as part of Habsburg Spain attempt to better defend and administer its Caribbean possessions. The reform also established captaincies general in Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Yucatán .
La capitanía general de Cuba fue una entidad política integrante del Imperio español establecida por la Corona española desde 1607, durante su periodo de dominio americano. Formó parte del virreinato de Nueva España hasta 1821.

The Captaincy General was a division of a viceroyalty in Spanish or Portuguese colonial administration. Captaincies general were established districts that were under threat from foreign invasion or attack from indigenous peoples. Their governors were the Captains general.
