Hace 4 días · In the 1480s, the Portuguese brought pillars (or padraos) with them in their explorations of western and southwestern Africa and placed them at prominent points, claiming these for Portugal. This is a replica of one of them, from what is now called Cape Cross, in Namibia.

Hace 3 días · The first European to land in Namibia was the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão in 1484. However, Namibia was first colonized by the Germans in the late 19th century, who ruled the territory as German South-West Africa until it was occupied by South Africa during World War I.
