Hace 5 días · Gruffydd ap Madog of upper Powys (son of Madog, who had been an ardent supporter and vassal of Dafydd's father Llywelyn), Maredudd ap Rhotpert, and Maelgwn Fychan all deserted him. Additionally, Henry III granted the petition of Senena, wife of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, to force Dafydd to release her husband from confinement and to be restored to a portion of Gwynedd as was due his inheritance.

At this time, the ever-encroaching Anglo-Norman lords were building impressive stone castles to assert their authority and status in parts of Wales, and Llywelyn needed to compete with his own show of strength.

His sons were taken to Bristol Castle there to be locked up. Both of them would die there, in the case of the youngest, Owain, after decades as a prisoner.

Hace 4 días · One contributory factor was undoubtedly that not all the welshries in Shropshire were of the same antiquity; gwelyau are not found in the eastern part of the lordship of Oswestry in 1086, and it seems possible that they were founded there in the mid 12th century during the Welsh resurgence under Madog ap Maredudd.
