Hace 5 días · In a charter granted by Edward III on 18 Jan. 1341, licence was given to Robert of Eglesfield to construct a collegiate hall 'under the name of the Hall of the Queen's scholars of Oxford'. (fn. 1) The idea of establishing such university halls was then in fashion on the Continent as well as in England.
Hace 4 días · Magdalen College Grammar School, Oxford The school was founded by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester, in connexion with his college of St. Mary Magdalen. The college statutes (fn. 158) provide that there should always be a grammar master and usher, who should teach gratuitously all scholars whatsoever resorting to the school.
Hace 5 días · The foundation charter is dated 3 April 1542, but Audley died in 1544 and the statutes were drawn up ten years later by his executors, one of whom was Sir Thomas Pope, the founder of Trinity College, Oxford. Site. Magdalene was the only College built on the farther, at this point the northern, side of the river Cam until quite recent times.
