(Click on image to enlarge) Dozens of richly dressed nobles and high officials surrounded the Aztec emperor, Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, whose name (Moctezuma) means “Angry like a Lord”. He wore ornaments of gold, precious stone and fine feathers, and a crown of turquoise gleamed upon his head.

Motecuhzoma like other Nahua rulers had many spouses and concubines: 600 according to the anonymous Spanish commentor of the Codex Tudela and 3000 (sic!) according to Francisco Lopez de Gomara, the author who had evident vice of exaggeration.

Hace 2 días · Although only 6 or 7 of Motecuhzoma’s children survived up to post-Conquest times (some died even before the Conquest at a very tender age) and at least two of them, Don Martín Cortés Nezahualtecolotl and Don Rodrigo de la Paz Acamapichtli died in their twenties and obviously without children, the remaining 5 sired enough offspring to populate Mexico, Spain, United States, and other countries.

The English spelling “Montezuma” deftly sidesteps the whole issue, losing of course a great deal of the original pronunciation. [so:ma:lli] is ‘anger’. [ (mo)so:ma] means to ‘to make an angry face, to frown”.
