The younger Bruce thus had a strong claim to be king of an independent Scotland. However, Bruce also had a powerful rival: John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, who had an equally compelling claim to the throne.

Bruce’s grandfather (also Robert) had been the principal challenger to John Balliol in the dispute over the Scottish succession that ended in 1292 with a resolution in Balliol’s favour.
