Hace 1 día · The Outbreak of War: June-August 1914. The immediate cause of World War One was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on June 28, 1914. The assassin, Gavrilo Princip, was a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist group that sought to create an independent Slavic state in the Balkans.

Moreover, the Russian Civil War can in many ways be considered a continuation of World War I, as can various other conflicts in the direct aftermath of 1918.

The battle was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse.
