In 1851 it had dropped to 890 and although it rose to 910 in 1861 it dropped in the next two decades and was 777 in 1881. In 1891, after the creation of the civil parish of Broad Town, the population of Clyffe Pypard fell to 427.

It was not without significance that in 1631 Wilton had been selected as one of the fourteen Wiltshire centres for cloth inspection.
