In December 2002, Gangs of New York premiered to a mostly positive response from critics. Scorsese won his first Golden Globe for Best Director, and the movie received 10 nominations at the Oscars (but won nothing). I have always considered Gangs of New York to be one of Scorsese's less compelling movies.
