I am currently living with a few roommates, and one of those roommates has made himself known as a huge manchild with homophobic views. And yeah, I'm smart enough to know that really this is a person who has hidden gay thoughts and I bring them out of him. But I don't find him attractive in that way (or any way, really) and I find myself being annoyed by his very essence.

In pitching him quite so whiny though, we as an audience have no one to cling onto, his befuddlement and public-school stutters make him a bit pathetic from the start, and his gradual breaking down physically is almost played as comedy.
