Torch was a compromise operation that met the British objective of securing victory in North Africa while allowing American armed forces the opportunity to begin their fight against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on a limited scale. In a tragic incident revealing the disposable attitude towards African soldiers, French forces killed at least 35 African ex-servicemen protesting poor demobilization conditions and unequal pensions at a camp in Thiaroye, Senegal in December 1944.[^15]
