Hace 2 días · Saint George ( Sant Jordi in Catalan) is also the patron saint of Catalonia. His cross appears in many buildings and local flags, including the flag of Barcelona, the Catalan capital. A Catalan variation to the traditional legend places George's life story as having occurred in the town of Montblanc, near Tarragona .
The chapel in London Road (Plate 36), an unimposing building whose site is now occupied by the South London Palace of Varieties, was blessed and opened in March, 1790, and finished in 1793. (fn. 201)
15 de may. de 2024 · The first church of St. George's, Southwark, was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. There is no mention of it in Domesday Book, but in 1122 it was presented to the Abbey of Bermondsey by Thomas of Ardern and his son. (fn. 100)
Hace 4 días · The Chapel of St. Edmund forms an hexagonal projection upon the passage leading from Palace Yard to "Poets' Corner." St. Edmund was Archbishop of Canterbury, and the anniversary held at his altar was on the 16th of November. An ancient wooden screen separates this chapel from the aisle. Here are several interesting tombs and monuments.
Hace 3 días · The house of Ivri, which came to an end early in the twelfth century, was followed by the family of St. John, and in 1149 Henry d'Oilly and John of St. John granted to Oseney the chapel of St. George and all its possessions; the existing canons, however, holding their prebends for life.
