During his early reign, Baybars expanded the Mamluk from 10,000 cavalry to 40,000, with a 4,000-strong royal guard at its core.

In the year 1099 AD, the Crusader forces occupied the city of Lydda, and in 1267 AD, the Mamluk Sultan Baybars annexed it. The city came under his influence after his victory over the Crusaders.
