Born in Buffalo, NY, Jeff Jourard grew up in Gainesville, Florida where he soaked up the soulful music culture of the South. Later, he relocated to Los Angeles where he reconnected with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers recording their debut album.
The band broke up then reformed in 1978 with guitarist Jeff Jourard who brought in his brother Marty on keyboards and saxophone. Michael Goodroe on bass and Brian Glascock on drums rounded out the quintet.

On May 12, 1979 (Mother's Day), The Motels signed with Capitol Records. The band began recording on the May 14 and finished within the first week of September. The band consisted of Martha Davis (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff Jourard (lead guitar), Marty Jourard (keyboard, saxophone), Michael Goodroe (bass) and Brian Glascock (drums).

He went on to lead the most popular band in town, RGF. Later, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he reconnected with Tom Petty and joined The Tom Petty project.
