Civilization fue el primer videojuego de la serie, publicado en 1991. Es un juego de un solo jugador, con versión adaptada al modo multijugador. El jugador toma el rol del regente de una civilización empezando con una simple unidad-poblador (a veces con dos) y trata de construir un imperio compitiendo contra otras civilizaciones.
