Abandoned by his British family, he avidly supported the Nazi rise to power in the 1930s, and encouraged his sons to serve in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War.

At the end of 1999, Hubertus attended the London School of Economics for a year, and then spent two years finishing his law degree at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
