The "5" Royales was an American rhythm and blues (R&B) vocal group from Winston-Salem, North Carolina that combined gospel, jump blues and doo-wop, marking an early and influential step in the evolution of rock and roll.
The "5" Royales are cited as a groundbreaking link between gospel, R&B, rock, doo wop, and soul music. Lowman Pauling and his brothers Clarence and Curtis backed their father, Lowman Pauling Sr. during concerts as the Royal Sons Gospel Group in their native North Carolina.
This bit of King Records hyperbole, a blurb accompanying the complimentary DJ 45-RPM release of “Women About to Make Me Go Crazy,” was absolutely true when the record was issued in 1955, and for the group the “5” Royales, even bigger things were just around the bend.
