The son of the grand duke Frederick I’s brother Prince William of Baden, Maximilian in 1907 became heir presumptive to the grand duchy because his cousin the grand duke Frederick II (d. 1928) had no children. In the first years of World War I he devoted himself to the Red Cross and to work for the welfare of prisoners of war (on both sides).
