Visit website. What To Do. Marischal College is said to be the second biggest granite building in the world (the largest being the Escorial in Spain). It is a blend of two styles: A. Marshall Mackenzie’s ‘perpendicular gothic’ (1890s) and Archibald Simpson’s earlier more austere architecture (1837).

Marischal College, Aberdeen's second university and Scotland's fourth, was founded in 1593 by George Keith (1553-1623), 5th. Earl Marischal. It was the first post-reformation university and carried the standard for the reformed religion against King's College in Old Aberdeen.
The college's huge and impressive facade overlooking Broad St, in perpendicular Gothic style – unusual in having such elaborate masonry hewn from notoriously hard-to-work granite – dates from 1906 and is the world's second-largest granite structure (after El Escorial near Madrid).
