The Oxford Military College (Cowley Barracks) duly opened on 20 September 1876. A number of soldiers who died at Cowley Barracks between 1877 and 1892 have crosses in the churchyard of Cowley St James Church (which used to be the regimental chapel of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry).
