Portland was the son of Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland and his wife Elizabeth Noel, daughter of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough.

In 1734 he married Margaret-Cavendish Harley, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Oxford. She was a great patron of the arts and sciences. He was buried on 8th May 1762 and she on 30th July 1785. Their son William became Prime Minister.
