Named after Charles William Eliot, Harvard University President from 1896-1909, Eliot house first opened its doors to students in 1931. Charles William Eliot’s presidency was instrumental to the Harvard community we have today, and Eliot house is an appropriate testimony of that fact.
Architecturally, Eliot House is an example of the typical residential college, modeled after the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. It was designed by the prominent Boston architectural firm Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbot and is organized around three open courts: the Forecourt, the Great Court, and the Master's Court.
Eliot House was one of the Harvard's original seven River Houses, undergraduate dormitories modeled on the English residential colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. Eliot House sits on the site formerly occupied by the Boston Elevated power house.
Hace 6 días · Eliot House, known for its iconic belltower and southwest gate that opens to the Charles River, will be the next undergraduate residence to undergo significant renovations as part of Harvard’s long-term House Renewal project. The design phase of Eliot House renewal began in January, with architecture firm KieranTimberlake.
