Edward Shippen IV. Edward Shippen (February 16, 1729 – April 15, 1806) [1] was an American lawyer, judge, government official, and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His fourth daughter, Margaret Shippen, was the second wife of Benedict Arnold . Early life.
He married Barbara Shippin in August 1747. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He died on 15 April 1806, in Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, at the age of 77, and was buried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.

Treasurer of board of trustees 1764-1765. Edward Shippen was born in Philadelphia, the son of merchant Edward Shippen III. The Shippen family had been central in the area’s economic and political life. There was a large family network, and many of its members held multiple public offices simultaneously. Edward was no different.

Peggy’s father Edward Shippen IV held moderate Tory sympathies but remained outwardly neutral as revolutionary fervor started to grow. Seventeen-year-old Peggy’s loyalist leanings didn’t grow until she started attending balls and parties thrown by British officers when they occupied Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1777 – 1778.
His children filled positions of importance in colonial Pennsylvania, and most historians depict him and his family as hedging their bets during the Revolution. Edward Shippen IV (1729-1806), who studied law in London, served on Philadelphia’s common council and acted as clerk for the colony’s supreme court.
