Mitchell spent most of 1973 in the recording studio creating Court and Spark. Mitchell and engineer Henry Lewy called in a number of top L.A. musicians to perform on the album including members of the Crusaders , Tom Scott's L.A. Express , cameos from Robbie Robertson , David Crosby and Graham Nash and even a twist of comedy from Cheech & Chong .
18 de may. de 2024 · Tom Scott had played woodwinds on Mitchell’s previous album, For the Roses (1972), and she decided to do some sessions with his jazz-rock band, the L.A. Express. The result is Court and Spark, an album that not only represents the culmination of Mitchell’s folk-rock period but also signals the many musical experiments in her future.
The year 1973 was relatively quiet for Joni Mitchell, at least as far as the public eye was concerned. She only performed a few times, once at a benefit concert, then a few shows with Neil Young; indeed, much of 1973 would be spent in the studio, finding the right musicians and the right metier for the songs that would make up her next album, 1974's Court And Spark.

Express, a jazz fusion ensemble that later served as Mitchell’s backing band, most famously for her double live LP Miles of Aisles also released in 1974.
