The Complete Porgy and Bess. This 1956 recording based on George Gershwin 's opera Porgy and Bess was the second "complete" recording of the opera after the 1951 version, and the first recording of the work to feature jazz singers and musicians instead of operatic singers and a classical orchestra.

Hartman studied music while at college and made his professional debut in the mid-'40s, performing with Earl Hines and recording his first sides for Regent/Savoy. After Hines' band broke up later in 1947, Hartman moved to the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and stayed for two years, recording a few additional sides for Mercury as well. Johnny Hartman ...
One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess -- done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd -- as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess -- but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes ...
