Not to be confused with the United States Navy Band Jazz Ensemble. Commodores, often billed as the Commodores, are an American funk and soul group. The group's most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer.

Among multiple Grammy Award nominations, they won a Grammy for "Nightshift" in 1986. In 2003, they were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

As the bass player for The Commodores , his creative energy produced those opening licks on “ Brickhouse ,” an R&B classic that was released in 1977, exactly 40 years ago.
Horn player Ronald LaPread was touring with his bandmates, accompanied by wife Kathy Faye, who fell ill while they were criss-crossing the country. She went home, only to be diagnosed with terminal tumors; LaPread came off the road to be with her.

On Ronald LaPread of the Commodores: I've known Ronald and the Commodores since the group first auditioned for Suzanne De Passe at Lloyd Price's Crawdaddy Club on Broadway in NYC in 1970. As close as we all were, I had no idea of the details of the sad and poignant love story that Ronald lived through not long after.
