Description: Russell first met the American Quaker, Alys Pearsall Smith, when he was seventeen years old. Russell fell in love with the puritanical, high-minded Alys and in marrying her in December 1894 he distanced himself from the world of Pembroke Lodge.

Alys Pearsall Smith Russell (1867-1951), Bertrand Russell's firs t. wife, was an early "libber" who not only worked politically for women's rights but also sought to improve the immediate social conditions of poor women. She was involved deeply in movements for temperance, better factory conditions, and higher education.
This chapter discusses Russell's love and affection for Alys, the youngest daughter of Robert Pearsall Smith and his wife, Hannah. Although Alys initially displayed a disdain for marriage, she eventually succumbed to his courtship on September 16, 1893.
