William Jerome (Jerry) Burgan, guitarist and founding member of the music group We Five and member of Local 47, passed away on March 29, 2021, at 76. Jerry was born in Kansas City, Kansas. The Burgan’s moved to Pomona California where Jerry met Michael Stewart, younger brother of the Kingston Trio’s Jon Stewart.
After completing their second album, Make Someone Happy, later in 1966, lead singer Beverly Bivens decided to leave the group. To continue, We Five replaced Bivens with Debbie Graf Burgan (wife of guitarist Jerry Burgan) and added a full-time drummer in Mick Gillespie for live performances.
Jerry Burgan, a founding member of the ’60s folk-rock group We Five, best known for their pop hit “You Were on My Mind,” died March 29, 2021, at age 76. He passed after suffering a series of strokes and a paralyzing neck injury.
The group began as a folk duo when Jerry Burgan and Mike Stewart began singing together in high school (inspired by Mike’s brother, John of the Kingston Trio). They added the sound of a female voice that was eventually to be made famous by Beverly Bivens.
Jerry Burgan plays guitar, banjo, sings, and arranges much of the band’s music. Known as “The Keeper Of The Flame,” he is the only member of the band to have been on every album from 1965 to the present.
