Jane Gordon, Duchess of Gordon ( née Maxwell; 1748 or 1749 – 14 April 1812) was a Scottish Tory political hostess. Together with her husband Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon, and son George, Marquess of Huntly (the future 5th Duke of Gordon ), she founded the Gordon Highlanders, a British Army infantry regiment which existed until 1994. Jane, Duchess of Gordon, nee Maxwell — circa 1775. The Maxwell ancestor I would most like to meet was Lady Jane Maxwell. Born at Monreith in 1749, Jane was the fourth child of Sir William Maxwell and his wife Magdalene Blair.
A political hostess and agricultural reformer, married Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon in 1767. She was a supporter of Pitt and a close friend of Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, such that some bellieved they were lovers. Dundas is said to have managed her affairs for her in London while she did the same for him in Scotland.

Edinburgh was the centre of the Scottish Enlightenment, and when she was thirteen Lord Kames, a Scottish judge and firm believer in the education of women, took Jane under his wing, allowing her to visit him to improve her reading, as well as other intellectual skills.
