Charles Stuart, Duke of Kendal (4 July 1666 – 22 May 1667) was the third son of James, Duke of York (later James II of England) and his first wife Anne Hyde. Charles was born on 4 July 1666 at St James's Palace.
There has only ever been one Duke of Kendal, and that was Charles Stuart, son of King James 2nd and Anne Hyde. It is unlikely that he ever stopped by this pub to sup on a flagon of finest mead (or indeed any other watering hole in the area), as he was born in 1666 and died the next year.
The first use of Kendal as a ducal title was in 1666, when Charles Stuart, son of the Duke of York, was given the titles of Duke of Kendal, Earl of Wigmore and Baron Holdenby. He died the following year, and these titles became extinct.
