When Princess Barbara von Hessen was born on 8 April 1536, in Kassel, Hesse, Germany, her father, Philippe von Hessen I, was 31 and her mother, Herzogin Christine von Wettin, was 30. She married Count George I von Württemberg-Mömpelgard on 10 September 1555, in Hohenzollern, Holy Roman Empire.

Her second husband was Daniel, Count of Waldeck. Their marriage was childless. Barbara was a daughter of Philipp I, Landgrave of Hesse and his legitimate wife Christina of Saxony.
Barbara was born in Neuburg, a daughter of Duke and Count Palatine Wolfgang of Zweibrücken (1526–1569) from his marriage to Anna (1529–1591), the daughter of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse . On 7 November 1591, she married Count Gottfried of Oettingen-Oettingen (1554–1622) in Oettingen. She was his second wife.
