Sarah Shelton (1738–1775), was the first wife of Founding Father Patrick Henry, the first Governor of Virginia.
Sarah Shelton Henry. Wife of War Governor Patrick Henry. 1745 – 1775 A.D. Sarah Shelton, daughter of John Shelton, of Hanover County, Va., was married to Patrick Henry in the fall of 1754.
Henry's wife, Sarah Shelton Henry, dealt with depression and violent outbursts. Despite recommendations, together they refused to place her in a hospital, instead providing care for her at home until her death. Patrick and Sarah knew each other from childhood and fell in love.
Shortly after the move, Sarah “Sally” Henry, Patrick’s first wife, gave birth to Edward or “Neddy,” their sixth child. By 1772, Sarah was experiencing symptoms of an extreme form of what seems to be post-partum depression so debilitating that Henry’s friends urged him to institutionalize her.
