The River War - An Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan. When the self-proclaimed Mahdi (“Guided One”) gathered Islamic forces and kicked the Anglo-Egyptians out of the Sudan, he unleashed a backlash.
An army that advanced overland with an enemy-controlled river on its flank was in perpetual, crippling danger of surprise attack from the rear. The rivers were also vital arteries for the Confederate economy, although lines of trade and communication were easily severed by patrolling enemy gunboats.
Here Sir Winston S. Churchill—the same man who would go on to lead the free world through its darkest hours during the second world war—tells the tale of the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of the Sudan.
