His elder brother died childless on 21 April, and Stanley became the 16th Earl of Derby. There were pressing family reasons to return home. Leaving Canada in early July, he was now out of politics for good.

He returned to England in 1893 and succeeded to the title of 16th Earl of Derby. He served in a number of high public offices and died at his country seat, Knowsley, Lancashire, on June 14th, 1908. Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby (15 January 1841 – 14 June 1908) was the Governor General of Canada from 1888–1893. In North America, he is best known for donating a trophy to be given to Canada's best amateur hockey club.
