Admiral Lord Edward Russell, CB (24 April 1805 – 21 May 1887) was a British naval officer and Whig politician.
John Russell, a close adviser of Henry VIII and Edward VI, was granted the title of Earl of Bedford in 1551, and his descendant William, 5th Earl, was created Duke in 1694, following the Glorious Revolution. The Russell family currently holds the titles of Earl and Duke of Bedford.

Russell commanded in the Mediterranean 1694–5 and in the Channel in 1696. The following year he was created earl of Orford. He served as 1st lord of the Admiralty 1694–9 and again 1709–10. Classed as a Court supporter and a placeman in the 1698 Parliament, he voted against the third reading of the disbanding bill on 18 Jan. 1699. In an analysis of the House into ‘interests’ in early 1700, he naturally appeared as a follower of the Duke of Bedford and Lord Orford (Edward Russell*). 5.

In 1692, Russell was Commander-in-Chief of the Anglo-Dutch force that fought the French fleet at Barfleur, and destroyed much of it at La Hougue, his victory there being the decisive naval battle of the war. Russell became First Lord of the Admiralty in 1694, remaining in that post until 1699.
